Geek Pride Day is annually observed on May 25. This holiday promotes the culture, hobbies, and interests of geeks around the globe. Geek culture, once a subculture, has become ubiquitous due to its contributions to popular culture. The number of media based on comic books, novels, role-playing games, tabletop games, video games, and even trading card games has increased in recent years. Cosplaying and other obscure activities are now part of everyday existence. In the past, these actions were viewed as immature and sometimes even disgraceful, but no longer.
Geek culture has evolved beyond the old stereotypes of socially awkward tech experts to become more approachable. Before superhero films and television programmes based on fantasy novels, it was not a compliment to be called a “geek.” Geeks were perceived as antisocial, awkward, and detested members of society who sought solace in the realm of fantasy. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, popular culture reinforced this notion by depicting nerds as the lowest ranking members of the student body in adolescent films. In the imaginations of many, the image of a pudgy, spectacled nerd in a dress shirt and trousers is still vivid. It is now accepted, even fashionable, to be a nerd.
In the early and middle 2000s, Silicon Valley played a significant role in the global acceptance of geeks and geek culture. People like Steve Jobs demonstrated with their charismatic rockstar personalities that not all geeks suit the Hollywood stereotype. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, along with Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, demonstrated that being a “geek” can be a financially lucrative endeavour. Slowly but certainly, geeks became well-known figures worthy of imitation and worship. Modern experts such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos best exemplify this culture. They are the archetypes of all geeks, inspiring equal parts admiration and jealousy.
In 2006, the first Geek Pride Day was organised by the Spanish blogger Germán Martnez. The internet and media coverage contributed to the holiday’s expansion. The United States began commemorating Geek Pride Day in 2008. The holiday honours the global evolution and expansion of geek culture, encompassing the geeks’ most cherished pastimes and interests. From anime and manga to constructing gaming PCs and painting figurines, the golden age of geek culture has arrived.
