A resolution was approved by Congress in 1929 to officially designate October 11 as General Pulaski Memorial Day. A presidential proclamation is issued annually in order to renew the resolution. With the exception of 1930, this has occurred annually since the event's inception.

Casimir Pulaski’s death anniversary, October 11, is observed as General Pulaski Memorial Day. He was a Polish Revolutionary Hero of the United States. Annually observed on October 11, this day honors the demise of General Pulaski from wounds sustained on October 9, 1779, during the siege of Savannah, as declared by the president. Additionally, the day celebrates the Polish American heritage. On October 10, 2002, President George W. Bush proclaimed the day officially; on October 8, 2010, President Barack Obama followed suit; and on October 10, 2017, President Donald Trump proclaimed the day officially. Every year on the first Monday of March, regions with a significant Polish population observe Casimir Pulaski Day, a distinct local holiday.

The background of General Pulaski Memorial Day

A resolution was approved by Congress in 1929 to officially designate October 11 as General Pulaski Memorial Day. A presidential proclamation is issued annually in order to renew the resolution. With the exception of 1930, this has occurred annually since the event’s inception.

The day is observed in the United States to honor the progenitor of the American Cavalry, Casimir Pulaski, a Polish immigrant. Pulaski entered the Continental Army more than two centuries ago and rose rapidly through the ranks to become a brigadier general. Collaborating with General George Washington, Pulaski established a cavalry regiment—another undeveloped colonial military—as part of his legacy. His pivotal role in establishing the cavalry from its inception established him as the “father of the American Cavalry.”

Pulaski, who was only 15 years old at the time, acquired some understanding of warfare during the conflict between his native Poland and Russia. Following his meeting Benjamin Franklin in Paris, he made the decision to immigrate to the British Colonies. General Washington was favorably inclined toward Pulaski due to his valor and battlefield experience. Nonetheless, Pulaski would not survive to witness the triumph of the conflict. The battle of Savannah on October 9, 1779, resulted in his injury. General Pulaski passed away on October 11, several days later.

Additionally, Polish immigrants and their descendants, who have made significant contributions to American society, are honored on this day. In numerous domains, Polish generations have contributed to the development of the nation. The excellence of the Polish Armed Forces, skilled labor, innovation, the arts, and culture are all observable.
