Genocide Prevention Day 2023: Date, History and 5 shocking genocide facts

Genocide reduces the effectiveness of the infrastructure that is currently in place, which in turn impacts the educational system and restricts access to education.

Genocide Prevention Day 2023: Every year on December 9, Australia observes Genocide Prevention Day. Acts of violence committed against members of a racial, ethnic, national, or religious group are referred to as genocides. The aim is to destroy the entire group. After World War II, when the extent of the Nazi regime’s atrocities against European Jews became evident, the term “genocide” was widely used.

Genocide Prevention Day History

Raphael Lemkin coined the term “genocide” first. Lemkin was a Polish-Jewish solicitor who immigrated to the US in 1941 after fleeing Nazi-occupied Poland. When Lemkin heard as a child that the Turks had killed thousands of Armenians in World War I, he was horrified.

Subsequently, during World War II, Lemkin set out to define the atrocities committed by the Nazis against the Jews of Europe. To deter and penalize violence against the innocent, he introduced the phrase into international law. In 1944, Lemkin combined the Greek word “genos,” which means “race” or “tribe,” with the Latin suffix “cide,” which means “to slaughter,” to create the term “genocide.”

Australia instituted Genocide Prevention Day to raise awareness of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. A set of guidelines known as the Genocide Convention spells out how to stop genocide and what to do if a nation faces genocide threats. In 1948, the UN ratified the convention.

In 1948, the United Nations declared genocide to be an international crime. Later, in the 1990s, the term was also applied to crimes committed during hostilities in Rwanda, an African country, and the former Yugoslavia.

Preventing genocide and genocidal conflicts requires an understanding of their causes. Identity is the basis of genocide conflict. Genocide is more likely to happen in areas where there are identity conflicts between various racial, national, ethnic, and religious groups.

Finding the components (discriminatory practices) that lead to the violent treatment of a group of people is the first step in preventing genocide. Examining methods to lessen and get rid of these contributing elements is the second step. Genocide is a global issue because no nation is entirely homogeneous.
