Geographic Information Systems Day 2023: Date, History, Facts About Geographic Information Systems

G.I.S. Day 2013 was among the most attended, with more than a thousand hostesses and 105,000 participants.

Geographic Information Systems Day 2023: November marks Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.) Day on the third Wednesday of each month. G.I.S. Day will be observed on November 15 this year. G.I.S. Day is an occasion specifically designated for the promotion of Geographic Information Systems, a technological domain encompassing map-based data and topography. In 1999, the Environmental Systems Research Institute established the observance. Facilitating the use of geographic systems to better comprehend and manage issues such as climate change, transportation planning, and population and demographic statistics is the purpose of this holiday observance. Ralph Nader was the person who provided the impetus for G.I.S. Day.

Geographic Information Systems Day 2023:  History

The National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers (A.A.G.), and Esri commenced the commemoration of Geographic Information Systems Day on November 19, 1999. Particularly, the National Geographic Society was instrumental in the November 1987 establishment of Geography Awareness Week. G.I.S. Day commenced throughout this week honoring geoliteracy. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is literally the technological definition of the word ‘where.’ G.I.S. is primarily concerned with the acquisition, visualization, and evaluation of location data in order to facilitate well-informed decision-making. Furthermore, G.I.S. is employed to ascertain the most advantageous site for a wind farm, forecast areas prone to flooding, and devise the most streamlined bus route.

Over the course of fifty years, G.I.S. has evolved from a hypothesis to a scientific discipline. In the 1960s, with the advent of computers and early concepts of quantitative and computational geography, geographic information systems (GIS) emerged. Research in academia served as the foundation for early G.I.S. endeavors. G.I.S. has developed into an indispensable platform for virtually all human endeavors. The integration of real-time information through the Internet of Things and the transition to the web and cloud computing have elevated it to the level of the planet’s nervous system.

The Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics contributed to the development of early software for creating computer maps. A formidable assemblage comprising individuals from diverse fields, including computer scientists, planners, geographers, and planners, devised a number of the initial ideas for G.I.S. and its Lab applications. An array of captivating endeavors can be undertaken on G.I.S. Day this year, including educating students about practical G.I.S. applications in the classroom or gathering G.P.S. data in the field.
