The citizens of Penang are pleased with their city’s designation as a World Heritage Site.

The background of George Town Heritage Day in Penang

George Town is one of the Straits of Malacca’s historic communities. The town was moulded by Asian and European cultures over many centuries of interaction with other civilizations. George Town, the first British settlement in Southeast Asia, was part of the Straits Settlements, which became a British colony in 1786. In 1957, Queen Elizabeth II designated George Town as a city, making it Malaysia’s first. The diverse cultural heritage of Malaysia’s first city made it appealing to foreigners from around the world. In 1969, when the federal government of Malaysia revoked George Town’s free-port status, the city declined.

By the beginning of the twenty-first century, many residents had left George Town’s historic core. The once-beautiful colonial-era structures were now in a state of dereliction and decay. As Kuala Lumpur continued to receive all of the government’s attention, the architecture disintegrated like an abandoned relic. Poor urbanisation planning led to traffic congestion issues, and brain drain resulted in a shortage of professionals and experts to administer the city.

In 2004, George Town’s fortunes improved. Together with the national press, the town’s non-governmental organisations rallied support to restore the city to its former grandeur. The election of opposition politician Pakatan Rakyat was a result of national resentment over the city’s dilapidated condition and the government’s decades of neglect. George Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, following concerted efforts by Penang residents and non-governmental organisations to clean up the city and revitalise its multicultural character. The UNESCO declaration prompted reconstruction efforts, and in 2010 George Town was ranked the ninth most livable city in Asia.
