On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low assumed the role of founder of the Girl Scouts in the United States. It is hypothesized that she accomplished this endeavor with the assistance of the Scouting Movement’s founder, Sir Robert Baden-Powell.
She gathered eighteen young women in her homeland of Savannah, Georgia, with the intention of imparting the knowledge she had gained while traveling abroad. It included juvenile education, outdoor activities, adventures, and special projects, among other initiatives.
Originally referred to as the Girl Guides, the organization’s name was changed to Girl Scouts in 1915. Juliette Gordon Low initiated the movement to instill confidence in young women regarding their future endeavors. Military-themed activities such as camping and drilling were included. Additionally, she resolved to instruct the young ladies in the following areas: map reading, cooking, first aid, livestock care, and knot tying.
She remained an ardent member of the movement until her untimely demise on December 6, 1927. Founder’s Day of the Girl Scouts coincides with her birthdate. During the early stages of the movement, she encountered significant resistance from individuals who held the view that females should not engage in such activities. James E. West, the chief executive officer of the Boy Scouts of America, was particularly noteworthy for his assertion that the Girl Guides’ activities were unsuitable for young females. Nevertheless, she persisted, acquiring further knowledge from the Girl’s Guide in England.
