The Dakota Medical Foundation, or D.M.F., was established in the 1960s when a group of medical professionals and local authorities banded together to establish a new hospital. Dakota Hospital was established in 1962 with a $1.8 million starting capital. Eleven doctors and 76 beds make up the hospital. Dakota Hospital provided a variety of services, including open cardiac surgery, joint replacement, and dialysis for kidney disease. Among the factors that have made Dakota Hospital one of the most illustrious medical facilities in history are the patient care services offered there and the caring, committed doctors who work there.
A Houston-based for-profit company purchased half of the hospital in the 1990s from the Dakota Medical Foundation. The remaining half was also sold to the same company a few years later. Within the foundation, philanthropic establishments were established in the early 2000s. Impact Foundation was established in 2005 by the Dakota Medical Foundation. This foundation was established to offer a means of lending money to charitable organizations and funding enterprises.
The Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation created Giving Hearts Day in 2008 as a flagship event to encourage people to give as much as they can. In less than a day, both foundations rallied and obtained over $450,000 from local nonprofits. Ever since, Giving Hearts Day has been observed annually on the second Thursday of February. It is a day to give as much as you can to charity organizations and change the lives of millions of people.
