Good Memory Day 2023: Date, History, Meaning and Purpose

Richard Semon argued in 1904 that human experience leaves a physical imprint on the neurons of the brain. The term for this is engram or memory trace.

Good Memory Day is celebrated annually on January 19 to honour memorable memories from the past and present while creating new ones for the future. We enjoy looking through old photo albums and laughing over a funny memory around this occasion. As the name suggests, this day is also a great opportunity to test your recall. Create a memory game based on significant childhood events and enjoy a day to remember. Plan a nice family outing or make that long-overdue call to your dearest buddy today.

HISTORY OF GOOD MEMORY DAY

Memory in humans has been studied since the time of Aristotle. The first attempts to comprehend memory can be found in Aristotle’s “On the Soul.” He was the first person to compare the human mind to a blank slate and to assert that people are the sum of their experiences. Later, the English empiricist John Locke popularised this notion and coined the phrase ‘tabula rasa.’ Midway through the 1880s, German philosopher Herman Ebbinghaus conducted scientific research on memory. Several experiments were conducted employing lists of meaningless syllables to generate meaningful words. Based on his research, he categorised memory as sensory, short-term, and long-term. Ebbinghaus is also responsible for the learning and forgetting curves.

Richard Semon argued in 1904 that human experience leaves a physical imprint on the neurons of the brain. The term for this is engram or memory trace. Using rats in mazes, American psychologist Karl Lashley discovered that memories are dispersed throughout the brain. Recent research indicates that the brain undergoes three processes: encoding, storage, and retrieval. These activities must be synchronised for our brain to recall memories. Although the human brain is capable of forming memories as early as the foetus, most people are unable to recall their early childhood before the age of three or four. But that’s alright! In the end, don’t we all occasionally forget things?

Good Memory Day is here to remind you of all the wonderful times you’ve had in the past and to inspire you to make more for the future. In the interim, do not forget to recognise and be compassionate towards persons who battle with their memory.
