Guadalcanal Province Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Guadalcanal Island, located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, is the largest island in the Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands celebrate Guadalcanal Province Day, also known as the Second Appointed Day, on August 1 each year. This day marks the establishment of Guadalcanal Province’s municipal provincial government. Guadalcanal is an island in the Solomon Islands chain, and its significance during World War II is well-known. It is a 2,510-square-mile island that is predominantly covered by vegetation. This province is renowned for its snorkelling, particularly at Bonegi shore.

The background of Guadalcanal Province Day

Guadalcanal Island, located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, is the largest island in the Solomon Islands. The volcanic island is traversed by the Kavo Range, a rocky ridge that culminates in Mount Popomanaseu, the country’s highest point. Honiara, the nation’s capital, is located on the northern coast. The island’s economy is dominated by fishing, coconuts, lumber, cocoa, oil palms, and produce; occasionally alluvial gold and silver are mined.

In 1568, the Spanish explorer lvaro de Mendaa de Neira visited the area and gave it the name Guadalcanal. It is also the name of a Spanish city. In 1788, John Shortland explored the northern coast’s protected anchorages. In 1893, following the advent of English merchants, the island was conquered by the British and incorporated into the Solomon Islands Protectorate. During World War II, the lengthy Battle of Guadalcanal, waged by Allied and Japanese forces on land and sea, took place on the island.

Guadalcanal is notable for the lack of roads along its west coast, which makes the territory largely inaccessible by land to outsiders despite its abundance of natural treasures. Mataniko Falls, Tenaru Falls, and Boarare Cascades offer limitless hiking opportunities across the island of Guadalcanal, which is covered in a dense rainforest.
