The background of Guatemala Independence Day

Guatemala was a Captaincy General and a province of New Spain, which is now Mexico, during the period of Spanish colonisation. The Captaincy General of Guatemala, which included Chiapas, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Honduras, declared its independence from Spain at a public assembly in Guatemala City on September 15, 1821.

Before the creation of the Guatemalan emblem in 1825, the country was believed to be a part of the Mexican Empire. However, this liberty did not endure. In 1838, liberal forces from Honduras recaptured the country for the Central American Federal Republic. The subsequent two years were filled with conflict because the Liberal Party of Guatemala recommenced its struggle for independence. This fight was led by Rafael Carrera, a military commander who subsequently became the first president of Guatemala.

The liberals eventually founded the autonomous state of Los Altos and withdrew from the portions of the former state of Guatemala that are now administered by Central America. Because Los Altos was a vital element of Guatemala’s economy, the conservative government of Central America reacted with strong opposition.

Guatemala declared independence from the United Provinces of Central America on April 17, 1839, following several months of conflict and increased pressure from other countries. Carrera was designated Guatemalan Governor in 1844. The economy of Guatemala began to expand, and on March 21, 1847, the country declared independence and Carrera became its first president.

Guatemala Independence Day provides Guatemalans the opportunity to celebrate their independence from Spanish rule and exhibit various aspects of Guatemalan culture, despite the country’s many political struggles and power shifts over the years.
