Guru Ghasidas Jayanti is a state holiday in Chhattisgarh, India. It commemorates the birth of Guru Ghasidas, the founder of the Satnami Panth.
Guru Ghasidas was born in Girodpuri, Chhattisgarh on December 18, 1756. He was born into a poor family and his father was a shepherd. When he was five years old, his family moved to a village called Kawardha. There he received primary education from a teacher named Gulab Chand. After his father’s death, he became a ascetic and began preaching the gospel of equality and social justice. His teachings attracted many followers and he soon became the leader of the Satnami Panth. Guru Ghasidas advocated for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized groups in Indian society. He also worked to end caste discrimination and promote education for all.
Guru Ghasidas was the leader of the Satnam sect of Hinduism between 1756 and 1836. In lieu of the caste system, he established the Satnami community in Chhattisgarh and advocated equality according to Satnami teaching. Primarily, he preached to Indians from the lower castes. Early in his life, Guru Ghasidas encountered the oppression of the caste system. This inspired him to devote his life to combating the caste system.
Guru Ghasidas’s teachings were similar to those of Hinduism and Buddhism, but there were enough differences to classify his movement as a new religion. In his teachings, equality, social justice, the truth, and peace were emphasised. He was opposed to other aspects of Hinduism, such as the “murti puja” practise, in which physical objects are viewed as the embodiment of gods during Hindu puja rituals.
