Every year on February 23, we join the people of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in celebrating Guyana Republic Day. This day commemorates the nation’s transition into a republic. Guyana is a vibrant nation in the northern regions of South America. The country is bordered by Brazil to the south, Suriname to the east, Venezuela to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. The Caribbean culture is deeply rooted in Guyana’s soil. It is a paradise for those in search of unspoiled and dense rainforests, wildlife, sugar cane plantations, and gold reserves.
Every year, on February 23, Guyana observes its Republic Day. It is a celebration of the nation’s transformation into a republic. Guyana’s modern history began with the Spanish expeditions. The Dutch began colonising Guyana in the 16th century. In 1648, the Treaty of Munster shifted the power back to the Dutch, who had previously claimed Guyana as their own. Dutch commercial ambitions led to the exploitation of the country and the establishment of tobacco and other agricultural plantations. The subsequent period witnessed the arrival of a massive African slave population and their revolts against their brutal treatment.
By 1746, the increase in British plantation owners in Guyana caused a shift in the region’s colonial powers. The Napoleonic Wars and the subsequent political unrest in Europe resulted in a change in colony control. The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and France shifted control of Guyana. Guyana finally became a British colony in 1831 and remained so until 1966. Among the significant historical events that shaped Guyana during this period were border conflicts with Venezuela, labour issues, the abolition of slavery in Britain, Chinese labour migration, the introduction of East Indian labour, etc.
On May 26, 1966, a coalition government was established by a group of political parties led by the P.N.C. Forbes Burnham led this new coalition to independence for the colony. On February 23, 1970, Guyana abolished the British monarchy and proclaimed itself a cooperative republic.
