The 3rd of June is H.M. Queen’s Birthday, a day to honour the birth of Queen Suthida, the monarch of Thailand. The day was declared a public holiday, and schools and most businesses were closed so that everyone could participate in the festivities. Thailand respects its royal family, so on the queen’s birthday, the country’s flag and images of her are widely displayed. The most beautiful celebrations are conducted on Bangkok’s Ratchadamnoen Avenue and the streets surrounding the king’s palace.

The background of H.M. Queens Birthday

Queen Suthida was born to the Tidjai family on June 3, 1978. She is Hokkien and is descended from Thai-Chinese ancestors. She attended Hatyaiwittayalai Somboonkulkanya Middle School and Assumption University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 2000 in Communication Arts. She worked as a flight attendant for JALways Airlines, a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, until 2008, when she departed for Thai Airways International.

Suthida was romantically linked to Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn in 2014, and although the rumours were largely unfounded, they appeared to hold water in the long run. This did not prevent her from excelling in her duties, as she was appointed commander of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn’s domestic guard in August 2014. Two years after her appointment, the international media referred to her as the king’s “consort” despite the fact that the palace had not formally acknowledged her relationship with Prince Vajiralongkorn.

After only six years of service, Suthida was appointed commander of the Special Operations Unit of the King’s Guard and promoted to the rank of general in December 2016. Following the reorganisation of the Royal Security Command in June 2017, she became the interim commander of the Royal Thai Aide-de-Camp Department. In May of 2019, Suthida was coronated in Bangkok and became the queen of Thailand.

After the coronation, H.M. Queen’s Birthday was established to honour Queen Suthida’s birthday. Almost every location in Bangkok is decorated with coloured lights, flowers, and portraits of the monarch during the festivities. Purple, the Queen’s ‘colour,’ is also worn by celebrants. Additionally, buildings are embellished with purple and yellow (the ‘colour’ of the monarch).
