Halifax Day is observed annually on April 12. This day commemorates the adoption of the first formal declaration of American independence in Halifax, North Carolina, in 1776. The ‘Halifax Resolves’ drafted on that day urged North Carolina to sever its connections with the British empire and support the American independence movement. North Carolina was the first jurisdiction in the United States to formalise such intentions. The North Carolina flag honours the “Halifax Resolves” by displaying their adoption date. Today, Halifax Day commemorates the adoption of the American independence ideal.

This began a significant movement to separate the American colonies from British authority. The separatists who campaigned for public support ultimately mobilised support for an independence declaration. Complete independence necessitated, however, that the delegates of the Second Continental Congress compose a declaration of independence, which none of their home states authorised.
On April 12, 1776, however, everything changed. North Carolina was the first state to approve resolutions demanding independence from the British Crown. This decision was made in Halifax, a municipality located near the Roanoke River. These resolutions were dubbed the “Halifax Resolves” and encouraged the delegates of the Continental Congress to continue advocating for an independence declaration. The American Declaration of Independence was ultimately adopted on July 4, 1776.
Halifax Day is observed annually on April 12 to commemorate the first time a state authorised its delegates to a Continental Congress to vote in favour of independence. The festivities take place in the Halifax Historic District, where visitors can take period-costumed excursions of the area.
