During the Middle Miocene Epoch in Europe and North Africa, hamsters are documented to have existed for approximately 11.2 to 16.4 million years. Their presence in Asia spans between six and eleven million years. At least four distinct hamster species have become extinct over time, including one that lived in North Africa during the Middle Miocene epoch.
The Syrian hamster was thought to be extinct until a mother and her offspring were discovered in 1930. Israel Aharoni, a biologist who had launched an expedition to locate Syrian hamsters near the ancient city of Aleppo, made the discovery. He had heard tales of a “golden hamster” and made it his mission to investigate the creature.
Although Aharoni disliked travel, he believed that the hamster species must be located. Aharoni located a litter of Syrian hamsters after days of seeking alongside a local hunter. As the creatures were being detained, the team observed the mother hamster eating her young. What’s the reason? It is a horrifying aspect of the nature of the innocent companion. The surviving infant hamsters were bred into the colony, and the rest is history! All domestic golden hamsters in the United Kingdom and the United States are descended from the individual captured by Israel Aharoni in 1930.
