On March 21, we come together to celebrate Harmony Day. Harmony Day, a 1999 celebration of unity and diversity that originated in Australia, is now observed globally by conscientious citizens. Whether you want to be better friends with your neighbors or put yourself in another person’s footsteps, we have some harmonious habits and unifying ideas to make Harmony Day a picture of peace.

The background of Harmony Day

Harmony Day was first observed in Australia in 1999, but its origins date back centuries. In 2017, researchers published evidence in the journal “Nature” that Aboriginal Australian progenitors arrived in Australia from Southeast Asia approximately 65,000 years ago. Although the distance was shorter than it is today because of large expanses of frozen water, it is believed that they still had to travel at least 45 miles by sea, possibly in bamboo canoes, according to the Australian Museum. These pioneers were the original indigenous Australians who coexisted with the land for millennia.

The British Empire then arrived in Australia in 1788, landing in Botany Bay to establish a penal colony for exiled prisoners. The British used Australian land to replicate their own Western civilization, a culture that was incompatible with that of the indigenous peoples of Australia, resulting in the mass massacre of those who had inhabited the land for centuries.

As a consequence, as the nation grew, Australia (like many other nations) became a society that was divided. Despite legislation enshrining equal rights for all in the late 20th century, many people continued to suffer from discriminatory attacks. In 1998, after activists criticized Australia for persistently ignoring its racism, the government commissioned a study on the character of racism over the previous decade. The study revealed a greater need for people to “live in harmony,” so Harmony Day was created to promote mutual respect and appreciation for the country’s multicultural heritage.

Despite the fact that Harmony Day is still primarily celebrated in Australia, people around the globe commemorate it by considering how they can live in harmony with their neighbors regardless of their background or circumstances. More than 55,000 Harmony Day events have been conducted since the holiday’s inception, with the communities choosing how to celebrate.
