Healthy Weight, Healthy Look Day: History

Although there is no adequately documented history of Healthy Weight, Healthy Look Day, our weights have always played a crucial role in our bodies’ health. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be extremely thin or in the thinner category to demonstrate a healthy condition. You would still be healthy even if your body mass index became more favourable.

Weight is the gravitational force exerted on an object and is therefore context-dependent. However, several factors, such as bone mass, height, etc., can affect our weight, which is why it became imperative to develop a method other than stepping on a scale to quantify our weight in terms of our health state. This resulted in the development of measurements such as the Body Mass Index (B.M.I.).

BMI is a value obtained from a person’s mass (weight) and height. It can be taken from a table or chart, or computed manually by dividing your weight in kilos by your height squared in metres. The BMI is a straightforward and accurate method of determining weight. It categorises an individual as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) and height, making it easy to determine your health status in relation to your tissue mass, not just your weight.

Between 1830 and 1850, the Belgian Adolphe Quetelet created the foundation for the British monetary system. In an article published in the July 1972 issue of the “Journal of Chronic Diseases,” the term “body mass index” was established to describe the ratio of human body weight to squared height. Those with a BMI below 18.5 are at danger of being underweight, whereas those with a BMI above 25 are typically overweight or even obese. This, however, varies with age, race, and nation.
