Heroes’ Day (Rwanda) 2024: Every year on February 1st, Rwanda observes Heroes’ Day. The purpose of the day is to honor the lives and national service of those who have defended the nation and contributed to the restoration of peace. The nation celebrates the occasion with a celebration in Kigali, and it is observed in both the public and private sectors. Wreaths are laid during the ceremony, along with soccer and musical performances.
Rwanda, which has a population of 12.6 million and is landlocked between Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a country in Central Africa. Its main city is Kigali. The Rwandan cultural and linguistic group is divided into three subgroups: Hutu, Twa, and Tutsi.
In Rwanda, this day is set aside to remember the 1994 genocide that claimed hundreds of thousands of Tutsi lives and resulted in the deaths of both Burundi and Rwandan presidents on a downed plane. Additionally, the day honors the pupils who were slaughtered for refusing to identify their Tutsi classmates.
On this Day, three categories of heroes are honored: Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi. Imanzi belongs to the class of ultimate heroes, whose accomplishments exemplify selflessness and sacrifice. Both warriors who fought for the country and those who lost their lives during the liberation struggle fall under this group. Major General Fred Rwigyema, who perished in the 1990 freedom battle, is a prominent hero in this category.
Heroes in the Imena category are renowned for their heroic deeds and selflessness. Agathe Uwilingiyimana, the prime minister of Rwanda, who was assassinated not long after the genocide began, is noteworthy in this regard. Lastly, the living heroes recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and selflessness on behalf of the country are classified as ingenzi.
On Rwandan Heroes’ Day, wreaths are laid, along with songs, dances, poems, and plays honoring the valor of dead heroes. This is aired nationally on radio and television channels.
