Human Rights Day 2023: On December 10, Human Rights Day, we commemorate the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is available in more than 500 languages and is among the most translated documents globally.

It has served as motivation for nations and individuals to begin recognizing each person’s inherent right to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. We recognize the significance of both this document and human rights on Human Rights Day.

Human Rights Day History

This day in 1948 marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly. Over 200,000 advance orders were taken for the United Nations Postal Administration’s 1952 commemorative stamp.

The purpose of the Declaration of Human Rights is to create a universally recognized standard of living to which all people are entitled and to serve as a catalyst for all UN member states to work toward achieving this standard of living for their citizens.

The rights are widely acknowledged to have had an impact on how human rights are perceived and to be a force for good despite the fact that they are seen as more declarative than legally binding.

These days, Human Rights Day is observed annually with a new theme. “Every Day is Human Rights Day” was the theme in 2014, and “Stand up for someone’s rights today” was the theme in 2016. Every day is a good day to remember our human rights, but on December 10 we should take a moment to appreciate them even more and treat everyone as equals.
