HISTORIA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA DAY GRENADA

South American indigenous peoples inhabited Grenada prior to the arrival of Europeans to the Americas. Christopher Columbus spotted the island of Grenada in 1498 during his third voyage to the Americas. Since the beginning of European colonisation of the New World in the 16th century, Grenada has been ruled by several European powers. Due to its abundant sugar output, the island became one of the wealthiest colonies after France took complete control of it in 1649. In 1763, following the French defeat in the Seven Years’ War, the Treaty of Paris transferred Grenada to the British. Grenada remained a British colony for more than two centuries despite a brief uprising by pro-French soldiers.

In the 1950s, independence movements emerged, and in March 1967, Grenada became an associated state. This status enabled them to obtain complete control over the nation’s internal affairs. Grenada attained independence from the United Kingdom on February 7, 1974, and Eric Gairy was elected the country’s first prime minister.

The newly independent nation joined the Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth continuing to serve as head of state. In March 1979, the Marxist–Leninist New Jewel Movement staged a bloodless coup d’état to topple the government of Eric Gairy. Thus, the People’s Revolutionary Government was founded. The new government was led by Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. Bishop was then caught and executed by soldiers of the People’s Revolutionary Army, which led to the October 1983 American invasion. Grenada has since reverted to electoral democracy and maintained political stability.
