Bangladesh’s Independence Day is annually observed on March 26. Bangladesh’s national holiday commemorates the country’s 1971 declaration of independence from Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman proclaimed Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan, formerly known as East Pakistan and West Pakistan, on the morning of March 26, 1971. Commemorating that historic day in 1971, the day is marked by parades, speeches, festivals, and other ceremonies.
On August 14, 1947, during the Partition of India, Pakistan obtained independence from Britain and was separated from India. Following this, the region that is now Bangladesh was referred to as East Bengal and then East Pakistan.
In 1970, however, President Yahya Khan of the minority West Pakistan region headed the nation. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was from East Pakistan (Bangladesh), won the elections following the general election. The government refused to grant Rahman authority.
Consequently, the people of East Pakistan demanded their independence. The government of East Pakistan began detaining East Pakistani military personnel, resulting in enforced disappearances. On the evening of March 25, 1971, the Pakistan Army launched “Operation Searchlight,” a military operation that amounted to Bengali genocide and resulted in the indiscriminate slaughter of approximately three million Bengalis.
Eventually, on the morning of March 26, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman proclaimed East Pakistan’s independence from West Pakistan. The story did not conclude there, however. Following that day, a liberation war between the two regions waged for nine months, resulting in the deaths of many people. On December 16, 1971, the conflict, which became known as the “Bangladesh War of Independence,” came to an end. Pakistan ultimately capitulated.
In Bangladesh, celebrations of independence include parades, speeches, festivals, and ceremonial events commemorating the country’s liberation. A salute of thirty-one gunshots is fired each morning.
