International Animation Day 2023: History

The International Animated Film Association (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation) created this unofficial holiday in 2002 to commemorate the day animation made its public debut. The inaugural performance of “Pantomimes Lumineuses” by Charles-Émile Reynaud and his Théatre Optique took place at the Grévin Museum in Paris on October 28, 1892. Three cartoons comprised the compilation: ‘Pauvre Pierrot,’ ‘Un bon bock,’ and ‘Le Clown Et Ses Chiens.’

Reynaud received a patent for Théatre Optique in 1888, which used 36 mirrors, two magic lanterns or supplemental lamps to illuminate a stationary background, and a projector to produce images on a screen. The artwork was inked onto an elongated strip that was coiled around two hand-rotating spools. Because operating the reels required some dexterity, Reynaud would typically use his hand.

Each of the three animations lasted approximately 15 minutes and comprised 500 to 600 painted images each. A pianist was present in addition to serving as the projectionist for Reynaud. Auxiliary actors delivered the dialogue. Up until 1900, half a million people watched the performance.

During that period, animation had already started to develop. The subsequent development was “lumière style,” which utilized photographs in lieu of hand-drawn ones to create a more realistic visual experience. At the Grévin Museum, audiences lost interest in the performances as they embraced the more contemporary aesthetic. Reynaud had delivered over 12,800 performances.

Reynaud’s inability to adjust to change resulted in unfavorable outcomes. Despondent and bankrupt, he destroyed the final Théatre Optique machine with a hammer in 1913 and dumped the majority of his films into the Seine.
