International Cheetah Day 2023: International Cheetah Day is December 4, and we’re getting ready to honor cheetahs, which are beautiful animals that are built for speed. Cheetahs are magnificent animals that move very quickly. But did you know that in Africa, cheetahs are the most threatened big cat? Today serves as a warning that we should respect and protect these wonderful animals.
International Cheetah Day is on June 14. The story of how International Cheetah Day came to be could be made into a movie. In 1977, Dr. Laurie Marker, an American zoologist, took Khayam to Namibia. She had raised Khayam from a cub at Wildlife Safari in Oregon. It was part of a test to see if cheetahs that had been kept as pets could be taught to hunt and live on their own in the wild again.
She and Khayam went back to the U.S. after the experiment went well. But while she was in Namibia, Dr. Marker saw that people who kept animals were a threat to the cheetahs that lived in the wild. They were killing cheetahs very quickly because they were a threat to their cattle.
In order to help farms and cheetahs get along again, Dr. Marker promised to protect wild cheetahs and started the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1991. She talked with the people and taught them how to protect wildlife. In honor of Khayam, Dr. Marker picked his birthday as the day to raise awareness about cheetah conservation. Since 2010, December 4 has been International Cheetah Day to bring attention to the fact that these cats are in danger of going extinct.
Unfortunately, too many people kill wild cheetahs for their fur, and as people build more homes, they lose their natural environment. As of 2020, there are only about 7,100 cheetahs left in the wild. In the last forty years, this is a shocking 50% drop. Therefore, let us observe today as a day to honor and protect cheetahs.

Give money to the Cheetah Conservation Fund.
There is no better way to support the cause of International Cheetah Day. Support the Cheetah Conservation Fund’s work and do your part by giving money to it.
Be a champion for cheetahs.
Tell your friends and family about the cheetah and other animals that need to be protected before it’s too late. Teach them about how losing cheetahs would be bad.
Go on a trip.
This is the best way to truly enjoy how beautiful these animals are! You could see a wild cheetah in motion if you go to a wildlife refuge or fly to a country that has them.

A lot of people think that all big cats roar, but cheetahs meow and purr instead.
They have a sun shield from birth.
The tear-mark lines on cheetahs’ faces go from the corners of their eyes to their mouths. These lines help them protect their eyes from the sun’s glare.

Their spots go all the way through to the skin, not just the fur. They have black spots on their skin.
Both “introverts” and “extroverts” they are.
Most of the time, cheetahs live alone, but they will protect their brothers and cubs.
It’s not often that cheetahs drink.
Every three or four days, cheetahs only need to drink water.
The cheetah is a beautiful animal.
Cheetahs are one of the coolest things that nature has made. They are smooth, thin, and strangely calm animals.
It’s a worthwhile project.
International Cheetah Day is more than just a day to honor these cats. People become more aware of the growing danger to the wild cheetah population.
It shows us that we can make a difference.
These amazing things that Dr. Marker did to start the Cheetah Conservation Fund teach us that people can do anything if they work together. Let’s do something different!
