Nuclear energy is a relatively recent achievement of the human species, and it possesses a vast array of advantages that make it a highly desirable source of energy.
International Chernobyl Disaster Memorial Day is annually observed on April 26. It is a day that will eternally be associated with the tragic day that the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, formally known as the Vladimir Lenin Nuclear Power Plant, experienced a systems test malfunction. The malfunction caused massive quantities of radioactive material to be released into the surrounding environment. As a consequence, portions of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus were rendered uninhabitable, as was a 30-kilometer radius around the plant, known as the exclusion zone. The 26th of April is a day that compels us to reflect on what transpired and the implications and dangers of nuclear energy.
Nuclear energy is a relatively recent achievement of the human species, and it possesses a vast array of advantages that make it a highly desirable source of energy. Despite having the ability to significantly alter the global energy situation, there are significant hazards that must also be considered. Much of what we know about nuclear energy is directly associated with its destructive potential and nuclear weapons. After the development and perfection of nuclear weaponry, however, the focus began to transition to its applications in the energy field around 1945.
On December 20, 1951, E.B.R.-I became the first nuclear power facility capable of generating usable electricity via atomic fission. The first of its kind, despite being minuscule in comparison to the nuclear power facilities of today. Initially, there was little opposition to nuclear energy, and awareness was limited; however, in the 1970s and 1980s, opposition to the construction and spread of nuclear power facilities intensified.
The Vladimir Lenin Nuclear Power Plant was completed in 1977. However, the entire construction project was plagued by failures, defective building materials, and insufficient equipment to complete the task accurately and to international safety standards. According to U.S.S.R. Prime Minister Nikolai Ryzhkov, the catastrophe was inevitable.
Despite the fact that the immediate destructive force of a nuclear bomb is significantly greater than that of a nuclear plant meltdown, this is merely due to the controls that are in place to mitigate this power; nevertheless, the environmental impact that a compromised nuclear powerplant can have on its surroundings is destructive and nearly irreversible.
Today is a day to raise awareness of the potentially catastrophic risks associated with nuclear power.

More than fifty percent of America’s renewable energy comes from nuclear power.
Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy, leaving the smallest carbon imprint.
In the United States, nuclear power plants produced 790 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2020, surpassing coal fire power plants for the first time.
The total amount of used nuclear fuel produced by the United States’ nuclear power system would not reach the 10-yard line on a football pitch.
