Every year on April 12, the world observes International Day for Street Children. This day was established to give street-dwelling youths a voice. So that their rights cannot be disregarded, this was done. This day affords human rights organisations opportunities to raise global awareness about the plight of street children. Street children can be rehabilitated and placed in loving families with the concerted efforts of governments, human rights groups, and individuals. In addition to finding them safe residences, the objective is to educate them, provide them with medical facilities, and teach them how to earn a better living.

The background of International Day for Street Children

The United Nations established the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. According to what was discussed at the convention, all children in the world should have the right to a stable, loving, and nurturing environment; healthcare and nutrition; clean water and electricity; equal opportunities; and the right to exist in dignity and independence.

These liberties do not apply to children living on the street. The Consortium for Street Children (C.S.C.) is attempting to implement the Four Steps to Equality in order to reduce the hazards that street children face. These stages include a commitment to equality, the protection of every child, access to services, and the development of innovative solutions.

Recent statistics indicate that up to 150 million children worldwide survive on the streets. Some children reside on the street with their families, while others spend most of their time begging on the street but return home at night. Some street-dwelling children are orphans with no family or home to return to. Obviously, these infants are denied many fundamental human rights.

Children end up on the street for a variety of circumstances. Living in a circumstance afflicted by war and conflict is one of the most prevalent reasons. In this circumstance, children are either isolated from their family or their family members have passed away. Some children abandon their homes voluntarily because of family abuse. Other reasons could include family rejection, health problems, or being compelled to engage in criminal activity. Regardless of the circumstances, street children are frequently denied access to education, health care, and opportunities to live a life of dignity.
