International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2023: On November 25, 1960, thugs connected to dictator Rafael Trujillo murdered the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic. Active in opposition movements against the Trujillo regime, the sisters were strangled and tortured to death before being placed in a Jeep and driven off a mountain road to make their deaths appear accidental. The General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in December 1999. Commencing on this day are sixteen days of activism and remembrance, which will conclude on International Human Rights Day.

A report by the United Nations indicates that 19% of women in the 15–49% age group have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence “at the hands of an intimate partner.” In some instances, the victims of this violence are killed.
