The 205th session of the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics. The day was then proclaimed in November 2019 at the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference. Later in 2020, on March 14, 2020, the world commemorated the First International Day of Mathematics with the theme “Mathematics is Everywhere.”
The primary objectives of the International Day of Mathematics are to increase public understanding of the significance of mathematics in education, to increase public awareness of the role of mathematics in modern society, science, and disaster management, to expand access to information about mathematics, to expand international networking and collaborations in promoting public awareness of mathematics, and to accomplish other objectives.
The International Day of Mathematics is observed annually with a different theme. The theme for this day in 2021 was “Mathematics for a better world.”
