International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was established by the United Nations Organisation (UNO) and is observed annually on April 24. The United Nations was founded for the singular purpose of preserving international peace and security and fostering goodwill among nations. This day was created by the organisation on December 12, 2018 to raise awareness for their top priority and to preserve the values of multilateralism and global cooperation. Since then, International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace has been celebrated annually, drawing global attention to the issue.

The background of International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

Since the conclusion of the First World War in 1918, world peace has been a major topic of discussion and concern. The need to promote peace on a global scale became a priority for all nations, and the first step was to establish an organisation that would fulfil this responsibility.

The League of Nations was the first intergovernmental organisation charged with maintaining international peace. After World War I, the Paris Peace Conference established it. The league was dissolved after 26 years because it was unable to withstand aggressions from the Axis Powers during World War II.

The dissolution of the organisation did not, however, result in a halt in the pursuit of world peace. The dissolution of the League of Nations in 1945 marked the establishment of the United Nations (U.N.). It arrived just in time, immediately following World War II, with an initial membership of fifty-one states. It was created to prevent future wars by preserving international security and harmony.

Multilateralism is the concept upon which the United Nations was founded. Simply stated, multilateralism is the union or alliance of multiple nations in pursuit of a common objective. It is anti-unilateralism, which means that even the smallest powers have a say in global affairs. The United Nations has become the most visible symbol of multilateralism and the foundation for the establishment of other multilateralism initiatives, such as the World Health Organisation, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Through resolution A/RES/73/127, the United Nations established International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace in 2018 in an effort to preserve the values of multilateralism and international cooperation.
