Annually, the International Day of Parliamentarism honours the parliamentary form of government. This day celebrates the foundational principles of a parliamentary system and the promise of political representation
International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated on June 30 in recognition of parliamentary forms of government. The day was first recognised in 2018 by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. It recognises the unique and enduring system of parliamentary democracy as the standard for political representation. The day also acknowledges how a parliamentary system can conduct self-evaluations to assess progress, identify obstacles, and devise solutions.
Annually, the International Day of Parliamentarism honours the parliamentary form of government. This day celebrates the foundational principles of a parliamentary system and the promise of political representation for billions of individuals. The General Assembly of the United Nations recognises the role of parliaments in promoting greater accountability and transparency among those in authority.
International Day of Parliamentarism commemorates the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (I.P.U). The I.P.U., founded in 1889 as the formal representation of parliamentary systems of government, is a global organisation that promotes democratic governance, human representation, democratic values, and the civil aspirations of a society. The I.P.U. performs essential work for democracy, peace, gender equality, human rights, youth empowerment, and political dialogue, among other things. In addition, the organisation distributes toolkits to encourage the participation of women, minorities, youth, disabled individuals, and minorities in representative democracy.
Parliaments are essential to the functioning of democracies. The term is derived from the French verb parler, which means “to speak.” For millions of individuals, political representation is a distant fantasy. The I.P.U. stands in solidarity with activists, social workers, and enthusiasts who support the structure and norms of parliamentary democracy. International Day of Parliamentarism also serves as a reminder to strive for more effective representation within the corridors of power. Parliament’s primary purpose is to give expression to the voiceless. The work is challenging and can only be completed with the participation of every citizen.
