The purpose of this day is to make the world more inclusive and diverse. On this day, individuals all over the world are encouraged to wear pink to stand against discrimination and in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The community believes that donning pink on International Day of Pink symbolises acceptance, bravery, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness.

The background of International Day of Pink

In 2007, two straight high school students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, witnessed a gay student at Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia, Canada, being harassed for donning a pink polo shirt. They decided to act and went to a nearby discount store to purchase 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the following day. They invited their classmates to join the fight against homophobic bullying by sharing the news with them online. The next day, thousands of pupils wore pink clothing to school.

Jer’s Vision was the founder of International Day of Pink. (now the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity). Although similar to Pink Shirt Day in February, which aims to end all forms of discrimination, the purpose of International Day of Pink in April is to express support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in their ongoing fight for equality and acceptance. The purpose of the day is to make the world more inclusive and diverse by encouraging youth to challenge social norms, demand more from their educators, and stand up to 2SLGBTQIA+ abuse.

Discrimination can be based on age, disabilities, gender, race, or sexual orientation, and it continues to exist in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. International Day of Pink is celebrated as the initial move towards making a difference and eliminating these social barriers in society. On this day, wearing pink is believed to symbolise acceptance, courage, diversity, equality, inclusivity, compassion, and unity. Outside support and participation will help spread the message of establishing a more inclusive and diverse world. The 2SLGBTQIA+ community will hopefully no longer be subject to discrimination.
