Approximately 150 million x-ray procedures are conducted annually in the United States.
International Day of Radiology 2023: International Day of Radiology (IDoR) is a biennial celebration that promotes the role of radiology in healthcare and is observed on November 8, the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays. The American College of Radiology (A.C.R.), the Radiological Society of North America, and the European Society of Radiology (E.S.R.) jointly introduced it in 2012. On International Day of Radiology, nearly 200 national subspecialty and allied organizations around the world observe and celebrate. An annual theme is selected to exhibit a diverse range of radiology specialties.
A branch of medicine known as radiology employs medical imaging to diagnose and treat human and animal diseases. Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, a German physicist and mechanical engineer, inadvertently discovered x-rays on November 8, 1895, during his investigation of cathode rays; this event laid the foundation for the medical specialty of radiology. Afterwards, Rontgen discovered and developed electromagnetic radiation in the range of X-rays and Rontgen rays, which earned him the 1901 Nobel Prize in Physics.
In 2011, the International Day of Radiology was instituted in continuation of the European Day of Radiology. In observance of the anniversary of Rontgen’s passing, the inaugural and exclusive European Day of Radiology (EDoR) was organized on February 10, 2011. Hosted by the European Society of Radiology was the occasion. The E.S.R., in conjunction with the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America, established the International Day of Radiology in the wake of the triumph of the European Day of Radiology. Additionally, it was concluded that the date commemorating Rontgen’s discovery of the x-ray should be shifted to the anniversary of his passing.
On November 28, 2011, the three founding societies formally recognized the day during the annual Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago. Ultimately, November 8 was selected as the commemorative date for radiological organizations worldwide.
