The United Nations has implemented a number of humanitarian initiatives and ratified resolutions and acts concerning environmental protection. A significant accomplishment of the United Nations is the extent to which it has contributed to the advancement and welfare of women, particularly those residing in rural areas.

At the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing, China in 1995, the concept of empowering and recognizing women was introduced. In recognition of the significant contributions rural women make to agriculture, food production, and food safety, it was proposed that October 15 be designated as International Day of Rural Women, coinciding with the observance of World Food Day on October 16.

A resolution was adopted at the 2003 World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva, which endorsed the commitment to enhance information and communication technology capabilities for all individuals, indigenous communities, women, and those residing in remote and rural areas.
