In the majority of the globe, free and public education is regarded as a fundamental human right. International Day of the African Child encourages governments across the continent to provide children with a high-quality education.
On June 16, 1971, more than 20,000 South African pupils in the township of Soweto demanded to be taught in their own language by taking to the streets. As a response, armed police officers murdered hundreds of demonstrators. It is now a public holiday in South Africa, known as Youth Day, and is internationally recognised as International Day of the African Child. The day highlights the obstacles African children must overcome in order to receive a quality education. Let us observe this day together and pay our respects to former students who sacrificed their lives for their community by assisting today’s students in achieving their objectives through the provision of Black student scholarships based on their African heritage.
