International Delegate’s Day is observed annually on April 25. It honours delegates who play a crucial role in the United Nations. Without them, there would be no United Nations. As representatives of their respective governments, United Nations delegates are committed to multilateralism. They collaborate under the auspices of the United Nations to aid in the resolution of global issues. Delegates take part in discussions at the United Nations General Assembly and other international fora. They vote, but their ballots are not counted unless a government or state leader is present. The delegates were selected by their respective governments. Consequently, they must act in the best interests of their country.

The background of International Delegate’s Day

At the United Nations, delegates from various nations exchange their perspectives and ideas. In the absence of high-ranking politicians, delegates address and vote on behalf of their nation at the United Nations General Assembly and other meetings where the Security Council is represented.

Delegates represent their respective nations. They are not appointed by themselves, so they typically support the political interests of the administrations that sent them. On April 25, 1945, delegates from 50 countries gathered in San Francisco. Following the devastation of World War II, they intended to establish an organisation that would promote peace and impose norms on the postwar world. More than 850 delegates participated in the two-month-long conference. Representatives of more than 80% of the world’s population — people from every religion and continent — gathered with the intent of establishing an organisation that will preserve peace and help construct a better world.

Two months after the first meeting, on June 26, 1945, fifty nations signed the United Nations Charter. The United Nations Organisation was founded in 1945 as a result of the signature of the United Nations Charter, which outlines the guiding principles for the organization’s operations. The United Nations is currently composed of 192 Member States and is governed by its Charter’s set of purposes and principles. International Delegate’s Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on April 2, 2019, to commemorate the signature of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco.
