According to the Yangshao and Hongshan cultures, the earliest evidence of feng shui dates back to 4000 B.C., when the entrances of the houses in Banpo were aligned with the asterism ‘Yingshi’ after the winter solstice, allowing the houses to absorb heat through solar gain. In addition, a grave at Puyang from the same time period that contains mosaics of a Chinese star map is aligned along a north-south axis, and the presence of both square and round shapes in the grave and Hongshan sites seems to indicate that the gaitian cosmography existed here prior to the Zhoubi Suanjing text.
The earliest feng shui instruments were liuren astrolabes (also known as’shi’), two-sided boards with astronomical sightlines used for divination and determining the position and altitude of the constellations. The earliest shi were discovered within burials dating between 278 and 209 B.C. Nearly identical to the markings discovered on the first magnetic compasses, these compasses have nearly identical markings.
Prior to 206 B.C., the magnetic compass was devised during the Han and Tang dynasties. Luopan is the term for the traditional compass used in feng shui, though a ubiquitous modern compass can be used as long as the differences are understood. The needle points to the south magnetic pole, not the geographical one, and a practitioner uses it to determine the precise direction of a structure, location, or object. It also contains a number of formulas and information about its functions.
