The background of International Harry Potter Day

In 2012, Harry Potter enthusiasts across the globe applauded David Cameron’s declaration that May 2 would henceforth be known as International Harry Potter Day. Over 500 million copies of J. K. Rowling’s literary series have been sold, making it the best-selling series by a single author in Guinness World Records.

Why May 2? In 1998, the Battle of Hogwarts was fought on this date. The decisive battle of the Second Wizarding War was fought at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Order of the Phoenix proved victorious, concluding the bloodiest combat of that war and resulting in a number of casualties, including Lord Voldemort.

This enchanted day is commemorated and celebrated in unique ways each year. There are anniversaries to observe, characters to recall, and locations to visit. Important locations throughout Europe with associations to the film host events. The notoriety of the entire Harry Potter franchise spawned a theme park, retail stores, an escape room, and Harry Potter-themed merchandise.

In Cameron’s official statement announcing the new holiday, he said, “In order to fully commemorate and immortalise her work, we have decided to declare May 2 as an official international holiday, in honour of the date that Harry Potter defeated Lord Voldemort, the series’ primary antagonist. On this day, we hope that both children and adults will be reminded of Harry Potter’s brave and honourable character, as well as the true contribution Ms. Rowling has made to society.”
