International Mud Day is a fun occasion not only for playing and having fun with mud, but also for raising awareness about cleanliness and access to sanitation in various regions of the world! International Mud Day aims to unite children from across the globe by enabling them to play in mud. International Mud Day is celebrated by children and early childhood educators around the globe by getting extremely muddy and observing nature, the outdoors, and messes.

The background of International Mud Day

At the “World Forum for Early Childhood Care and Education,” members of the “Nature Action Collaborative for Children” Gillian McAuliffe and Bishnu Bhatta discussed the disparities in mud play between their respective countries, Australia and Nepal. Bishnu’s problem was not a dearth of mud, but rather a lack of clothes and soap to clean them. When Gillian brought this issue to the attention of the children in her community, they all banded together and began a campaign to raise funds and send them to the children in Nepal so they could purchase clothing and detergent.

Eventually, the Australian children were able to raise $1,000, and Bishnu was able to organise an event for the orphanage’s Nepali children. In addition to being allowed to play in the mud, they also had their first meat meal in five months! Since then, each year both parties gather in their respective nations to play in the mud. In 2013, six Australian families travelled to Nepal to partake in the festival. These families have also contributed to the orphanage’s renovations.

The resultant partnership has inspired educators, students, and families from Holland to Nepal to the United States to celebrate International Mud Day annually on June 29. On this muddy day, we all appear the same, regardless of age, race, or religion! Over the years, new materials have been published to help educators from all over the world commemorate International Mud Day and help their students connect with nature and comprehend the differences between their relationship with mud and that of others.
