International Permaculture Day is observed annually on the first Sunday of May, which will occur on May 7 this year. It functions as a day to remind individuals to adopt practises that foster productive, environmentally-friendly, and primarily self-sufficient homes and communities. The earth is our responsibility, and we should do what we can to ensure that it remains a safe place for us to inhabit, as the alternative has devastating consequences. A permaculture design system is comprised of a collection of ethics, design principles, characteristics, and practises that organisations, communities, and individuals can use to develop practical applications.
Permaculture was created as a result of the passion of Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, who set aside other pursuits to sincerely care for the planet because they believed we were taking from it without giving anything in return. They observed that this was unsustainable for humans, flora, animals, and the planet, and that a system was required to combat it.
In 1954, Mollison worked in the Tasmanian rainforests with the CSIRO (Wildlife Survey Section), which led to Mollison developing the theories and concepts underlying permaculture as a design practise — devising methods to develop systems that actively sustain both humans and wildlife. In the mid-1970s, Mollison and Holmgren coined the term “permaculture” to characterise a “integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-reproducing plant and animal species useful to humans.” Ended the 1970s on the island state of Tasmania, they initiated the Permaculture Design System.
Bill Mollison of the University of Tasmania met David Holmgren, a Landscape Design student at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education. Together, they combined techniques from traditional practises with modern scientific knowledge to create the basis for a way of life that was likely to be long-lasting and meet the requirements of people. Mollison founded the Permaculture Institute in 1978 to provide formal instruction in the theory and practise of permaculture. His teachings have since been adopted by institutes around the world. With the publication of Permaculture One and Two, they disseminated this new sustainable design concept. They taught a whole cohort of permaculturists who, like themselves, devoted their lives to the practise.
