International Red Panda Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Pandas

Red Pandas are endearing animals native to the eastern Himalayas. This category comprises China, Nepal, and Bhutan. Sadly, like hundreds of other animal species on Earth, this species confronts imminent extinction.

International Red Panda Day is observed annually on the third Saturday of September — September 16 this year — to bring attention to yet another species on the verge of extinction. The day was established by the Red Panda Network in 2010, and the inaugural celebration took place in September of that year. Due to global warming and climate change, the need to continue honouring the day has only increased since then. Want to contribute to the cause? You only need to celebrate this international day and perform a positive role in the preservation of the species.

The background of International Red Panda Day

Red Pandas are endearing animals native to the eastern Himalayas. This category comprises China, Nepal, and Bhutan. Sadly, like hundreds of other animal species on Earth, this species confronts imminent extinction. Why, you inquire? Due to humanity, of course! As a result of human-caused environmental degradation, red pandas, which nest in bamboo trees, can no longer locate suitable trees to nest in. Poaching, habitat devastation, and trafficking are additional human activities that have threatened the survival of this species. In actuality, red panda fur is also trafficked for use in caps and garments. According to a report, red pandas are “legally protected in India, Bhutan, China, Nepal, and Myanmar” for these reasons. Another report focusing on animal conservation attributed the decline of red pandas to “poor conservation awareness and weak law enforcement.”

The Himalayas, where red pandas reside primarily, have weak law and order for the preservation of the species, so the animal is frequently hunted. Most importantly, the Nepalese government lacks the resources to conduct research on how to save the species. Because of this, the IUCN Red List classifies red pandas as ‘endangered.’ WWF is one such organisation that works ceaselessly to protect red pandas.

Need to learn more about the magnificent creature? The following information may be of interest. Red pandas are as tiny as a housecat and have no relation to giant pandas. According to the Red Panda Network, the animal contributes to the health of the ecosystem.
