The background of International Right To Know Day

Knowledge affects our thinking, reasoning, and manner of expression. Typically, we base our decisions on facts and knowledge. Since we live in a society that is interdependent, it is crucial that we are aware of what is going on around us so that we can take action for our safety and improvement. International Right To Know Day is a celebration of the right to search and obtain information.

Initiated in 2002 by a UNESCO Conference, the day was endorsed and developed by numerous international civil societies, which celebrated it in 2012. It was ultimately proclaimed in 2019 by the U.N. General Assembly as International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) and is officially celebrated on September 28.

International Right to Know Day was founded by African civil societies that demanded disclosure. The citizen’s right to know would serve as a check on government actions and law enforcement. International Right To Know Day not only empowers citizens to actively participate in their countries’ political systems, but it also supports press freedom, facilitating the dissemination of information. Access to Information Program (AIP) hosts an annual awards ceremony to honor access to information in Bulgaria.
