International Safety Pin Day is observed annually on April 10. This unofficial celebration honours safety pins, a simple yet ingenious and useful invention. The safety pin has numerous applications. For instance, it is used to secure clothing, as a decorative element, and as an accessory. The safety pin was invented and patented by Walter Hunt, and its design has not changed significantly since its creation. It is a day to commemorate the straightforward and practical invention of Hunt.
In order to repay a $15 debt to a friend, Walter Hunt, born in 1796, invented the safety pin in April 1849. Walter Hunt was a United States-born mechanic. The patent was sold to “W. R. Grace Company” for $400 because Hunt did not receive any actual cash or fame from his invention. He returned the money to his associate and kept the remaining $385. Hunt invented the safety pin to enhance the ‘dress pin’ and prevent injuries to the fingertips and other body parts. It was stated that he created the safety pin using a brass wire approximately 8 inches long.
The fundamental design that Walter Hunt created in 1849 is still in use today. Although the safety pin was created to secure fabric and apparel, it is also worn as jewellery and substituted for body piercing rings. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of applications for safety pins. Some of them include pinning two pieces of clothing together to be sewn, pinning cloth diapers together, keeping cloth sacks closed, embellishing clothing, etc.
Walter Hunt developed numerous innovations. Additionally, he developed a repeating rifle, a fountain pen, and a knife sharpener. In addition to the safety pin, he also invented the sewing machine, which was his most notable invention. The truth is that he did not patent this invention because he feared that it would displace those who sew by hand. Frequently, Hunt did not fully realise the economic benefits of their inventions. In 2015, this holiday was referred to as Safety Pin Day, whereas in 2017, it is commonly known as International Safety Pin Day. Eventually, it became known as National Safety Pin Day.
