International Scribble Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Power of Doodling

Scribbling is sometimes referred to as doodling, and the terms are frequently used interchangeably. However, there is a subtle distinction between the acts and the origins of the terms.

International Scribble Day is observed annually on March 27 and is a celebration of the creativity and art associated with scribbling, which can be performed by anyone regardless of artistic ability. So, the last time you scribbled aimlessly to alleviate boredom, you may not have been aware that there is a day dedicated to this stress-relieving activity.

The background of International Scribble Day

Scribbling is sometimes referred to as doodling, and the terms are frequently used interchangeably. However, there is a subtle distinction between the acts and the origins of the terms.

The origin of the word scribble can be traced back to the Latin verb scribere, which means to write. To scribble is to quickly write letters or phrases, frequently in an illegible manner. In contrast, doodle refers to drawing or amateur art. Etymologically, the term doodle is derived from the German words ‘Dudeltopf’ or ‘Dudeldop’, which mean’simple’.

Students under stress scribble in their notebooks, whereas students who are restless and daydreaming in class create doodles.

International Scribble Day was established in 2019 by Diane Alber, author of “I’m NOT Just a Scribble.” The day’s origins are relatively recent, as the holiday was founded in 2019. The book is about compassion and acceptance, as exemplified by the adorable character Scribble, and it encourages children of all artistic abilities to create art. Teachers reacted positively to Diane’s Facebook post announcing her intention to establish National Scribble Day, so she proceeded with the initiative.

Typically, the day is observed in schools, where children participate in various activities to construct their own version of Scribble. International scrawl Day promotes scribbling because every artist began with a scrawl!
