International Special Librarians Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Annually, International Special Librarians Day is observed on April 13. National Library Week is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday of the second complete week of April. It is a day that honours the unique contributions of information professionals by highlighting their vital responsibilities within the global information community. It encourages them to promote the services they offer to internal and external communities as well as their users, clients, and management.

The background of International Special Librarians Day

For a business to be successful, it must have access to services that provide, among other things, decision-ready data, reliable market intelligence, and efficient data collection and sharing. All of these are attributes that information professionals offer to the table. They have received training in knowledge management, information research, data analysis and presentation. They should understand the mission and market of your business. Information specialists serve as intranet managers, librarians, information specialists, knowledge managers, and research analysts, among other positions. Others are employed in traditional libraries and information centres. Numerous individuals are members of research and development, market research, and strategic planning teams.

The “Special Libraries Association” (SLA) is a global, non-profit organisation for innovative information professionals and their partners in government, business, academic, and other specialised contexts. International Special Librarian Day was founded by the SLA Board of Directors. In addition to the SLA, “Factiva” also sponsors this publication. The event’s continued expansion enabled information professionals to exhibit their services and resources through a variety of SLA-supplied activities.

In 2007, seventeen years after its founding, the “SLA Public Relations Advisory Council” sought to create an alternative event to recognise and highlight the specialised skills and enterprise value that information professionals contribute. They discovered that the majority of executives were unaware that their resident information professional or special librarian added value to their organisation by protecting it from litigation or scandal. It was too late before any consideration was given to information ethics. To rectify this, a new, more edifying education day would be required. ISLD was superseded by Information Ethics Day, which was formally introduced during SLA’s Centennial Celebration.

INTERNATIONAL SPECIAL LIBRARIANS DAY ACTIVITIES

Visit a library

In today’s online-centric society, many people undoubtedly haven’t visited one since they were in elementary school. You may discover some interesting reading material and make a new librarian friend by perusing the local library.

Purchase a cup of coffee for a librarian.

Sorting through massive amounts of information can be tedious. Give everyone, from the librarian at the public library to the IT manager at your company, a complimentary cup of coffee to energise them for the task at hand.

Observe librarians on the silver screen.

This often-overlooked occupation is adequately represented in film. The librarian characters in “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Party Girl,” and “The Time Machine” exhibit the same tenacity and diligence as their real-life counterparts.

5 OF THE MOST BREATHTAKING LIBRARIES IN THE U.S.

The “Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library” at “Yale University” is made of granite, glass, bronze, and Vermont marble so fine that it gives the interior a soft golden radiance.

“The Public Library of Boston”
It is modelled after a Renaissance cloister and contains rare works of art and lavish decor, including a coffered ceiling in one of its spacious reading chambers.

“George Peabody Collection”
Its dramatic interior features enormous skylights that let in natural light, soaring ceilings, and balconies with elaborate cast-iron railings on five stories.

The world’s largest library, “Library of Congress,” features hand-carved sculptures and painted decorations by more than 50 American artists, as well as the iconic “Main Reading Room” in its “Thomas Jefferson Building.”

“Public Library of New York City”
It has three arches, six tall Corinthian columns, a grand marble staircase, and the world-famous pair of marble lions, Patience and Fortitude, which protect the Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street entrance.
