International Tiger Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Tiger

International Tiger Day was first observed in 2010 after it was discovered that 97% of all native tigers had vanished over the past century, leaving only about 3,000 individuals.

International Tiger Day is annually celebrated on July 29. The tiger is widely regarded as the largest of the world’s big animals. Tigers are readily identified by the orange and black stripes on their faces and bodies. International Tiger Day is observed worldwide so that we can all raise awareness for tiger conservation. The purpose of this day is to establish a global protection system for tigers and their natural habitats. A safe and flourishing habitat for tigers necessitates the preservation of other species and our forests. Through International Tiger Day, we can strive towards a future in which tigers and humans can coexist in peace.

The background of International Tiger Day

International Tiger Day was first observed in 2010 after it was discovered that 97% of all native tigers had vanished over the past century, leaving only about 3,000 individuals. It is not news that tigers are on the verge of extinction, and the purpose of International World Tiger Day is to stop the decline. Loss of habitat, climate change, hunting, and poaching are just some of the causes of the decline in the tiger population. In addition to preserving these species, the day seeks to safeguard and expand their habitats. International Tiger Day is also observed by numerous international organisations, including WWF, IFAW, and the Smithsonian Institute.

As a result of habitat loss and climate change, tigers are increasingly at odds with humans. Poaching and the illegal wildlife trade are also extremely severe threats to wild tigers. The increased demand for tiger bone, skin, and other body parts is driving an increase in poaching and trafficking. This is causing localised extinctions, making it nearly impossible to revive the tiger population. The elimination of habitat has also had a negative impact on the tiger population. We are observing a global decline in tiger habitats due to access routes, human settlements, timber harvesting, plantations, and agriculture. Today, only about 7 percent of the original tiger habitats remain intact. Experts are also concerned that the lack of genetic diversity in tiger populations may result in inbreeding in limited populations. The ever-increasing loss of tiger habitat has led to an increase in tiger-human conflicts. Tigers may wander into human populations, which is concerning for both humans and these magnificent animals.
