International Women’s Day : History

The United Nations started celebrating Women’s Day on March 8, 1975, but before that an exercise had been done to celebrate it in the year 1909.

In fact, in the year 1909, for the first time in America, Women’s Day was celebrated on 28 February.

The Socialist Party of America had chosen this day to honor the 1908 strike of garment workers in New York.

On the other hand, Russian women first registered their protest against the First World War by celebrating Women’s Day on 28 February.

Russian women went on strike in 1917 demanding bread and pieces. The strike started on the last Sunday of February.

It was a historic strike and when the Tsar of Russia left power, the interim government there gave women the right to vote.

In Europe, on March 8, women took out rallies to support peace activists.
