International Women’s Day 2023: In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. International Women’s Day (IWD) was born from this protest.
Since then, IWD has been celebrated annually on March 8th. It’s a day to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8, 1911. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America in response to the previous year’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City, which killed 146 workers, mostly young women.
In 1913, Russian activists observed International Women’s Day as a way to protest the country’s lack of democracy and to call for women’s suffrage. The day became a national holiday in Soviet Russia in 1917, and it spread to other countries following the Russian Revolution.
