Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

For many years, men have dominated STEM fields, particularly engineering and computer science. Women account for 14% of engineers in the United States, which is an increase from 5.8% in the 1980s.

A momentous occasion, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is celebrated annually in late February during Engineering Week. This year’s event occurs on February 25. In 1951, the National Society of Professional Engineers (N.S.P.E.) established this day. According to the N.S.P.E., “Engineering Week aims to ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by boosting interest in engineering and technology careers.” Did you know that since the 18th century (the Age of Enlightenment), STEM fields have remained predominantly male? It is an issue that is escalating rapidly and requiring immediate action. This is being accomplished primarily through the creation of scholarships for women.

The background of Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day

For many years, men have dominated STEM fields, particularly engineering and computer science. Women account for 14% of engineers in the United States, which is an increase from 5.8% in the 1980s. However, there is still work to be done to increase their representation. Despite the fact that the engineering industry has received a significant boost from the increasing number of female applicants, a staggering 40 percent of women leave engineering for other fields.

Man has always been intuitively creative, with the innate ability to utilise imagination and adapt to various circumstances. The origins of engineering can be traced back to the invention of wedges, levers, wheels, and pulleys in antiquity. The word ‘engineering’ is derived from the Latin words ‘ingeniare’ and ‘ingenium’, which mean ‘to create’ or ‘to devise’ and ‘cleverness’ respectively.

The Egyptian pyramids and Mesopotamian ziggurats, among others, are examples of early civil and military engineering from antiquity. Egyptian chancellor Imhotep, one of the Pharaoh’s officials, is believed to have designed the Pyramid of Djoser, the Step Pyramid of Saqqara in Egypt constructed around 2630 B.C., according to historical records.

Modern engineering draws heavily from Newtonian mechanics (based on Newton’s Laws of motion) and began in the 18th century. For many years, engineering was dominated by men; however, in today’s society, women are fighting successfully for equal opportunities in the engineering workplace.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day was established by the N.S.P.E., IBM, and the National Engineering Week Foundation fifteen years ago. This day is an effort to introduce young women to STEM careers in order to promote equality in STEM fields by allowing them to engage in practical work tasks and learn about the diversity of these fields.

INTRODUCE A GIRL TO DAY OF THE ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES

Engage their curiosity

Engineering is one of the most diverse fields in the world, yet women are grossly underrepresented. You could spark curiosity and enthusiasm by showcasing how engineering intersects with fields such as beauty, construction, and health.

Problem-solving is the focus of hands-on training. Explore the awe-inspiring transformative impact of engineering on everyday life through workshops and events, and discuss the plethora of opportunities awaiting you.

Modify the social mentality

Because of perception and stereotypes, STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and medicine) are predominantly dominated by men. Girls are also intelligent and capable in the field of engineering. For women to flourish in engineering, we must foster mentorship and a conducive environment.

5 SUPER COOL Engineering Facts

In 1919, after completing her MSc at MIT, the pioneering electrical engineer accomplished the feat by earning her degree.

Lovelace, an English mathematician, created an algorithm for a computing machine in the mid-nineteenth century.

In 1992, American engineer Mae Jemison became the first African American woman in space, rewriting history.
