Iraq Victory Day 2023: Date, History and 5 Facts About Iraq

Iraq Victory Day honors the brave warriors who fought ISIS and serves as a reminder of their valor in establishing a free state in Iraq.

Iraq Victory Day 2023: Iraq commemorates Iraq Victory Day on December 10 of each year. It honors Iraq’s triumph over the Islamic State (ISIS), an extremist Islamic rebel movement that swept through neighboring Syria and Iraq in December 2017 and is observed as a public holiday. After Iraqi forces drove the last of the Islamic State’s remnants out of the nation, then-prime minister Haider al-Abadi declared the group’s defeat.

This took place three years after the militant group had captured nearly a third of Iraq’s territory. The declaration was made two days after the Russian military declared that the militants in Syria’s neighbor had been routed. Allies like the United States, NATO, Russia, and Iran greatly aided Iraq’s victory over ISIS.

The Victory Day History of Iraq

Abu Musab al Zarqawi formed the Islamic State, also referred to as ISIS, ISIL, or Daesh, in 2004 after it split from the remnants of al Qaeda in Iraq. It vanished from view for a while after the 2007 surge of American forces in Iraq, but it started to resurface in 2011. It used the increasing unrest in both Syria and Iraq over the ensuing years to launch attacks there and expand its forces.

In 2013, the group went on to adopt the name Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). ISIS began attacking Mosul and Tikrit in Iraq in June 2014. On June 29, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS at the time, renamed the organization the Islamic State and declared the creation of a caliphate extending from Aleppo, Syria, to Diyala, Iraq.

Several countries assisted Iraq in the fight against ISIS, and numerous attempts were made to free the country from the grip of the Islamic State. ISIS sustained significant losses along Syria’s border with Turkey as a result of more than 8,000 airstrikes carried out by the United States alone in Iraq and Syria. While Iraqi forces succeeded in retaking Ramadi by the end of 2015, ISIS continued to hold Raqqa and other strongholds in Syria and had made progress toward Aleppo.

Ninety-five percent of ISIS’s territory had been lost by December 2017, including its two largest holdings, the nominal capital of Raqqa in northern Syria and the second-largest city in Iraq, Mosul. On December 9, 2017, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory against the Islamic State in his country, and on December 10th, Iraq Victory Day was observed.
