Isdal Woman Day 2023: Every year on November 29th, it is declared as Isdal Woman Day. Its name comes from the unnamed woman whose dried-out remains were found in the 1970s not far from Bergen, Norway. The goal of this day is to recognize and remember all persons who have died under mysterious or contentious circumstances, especially those whose remains could not be identified, rather than just drawing attention to this unsolved mystery. Additionally, it is a day for individuals to reflect on their families and loved ones. Coping with grief is difficult enough; losing the precise details is an even greater challenge.

Isdal Woman Day 2023: History

A man and his two small daughters were trekking in the Isdalen (“Ice Valley”) area in the foothills of Ulriken, Norway, on November 29, 1970, in the afternoon. The area is also known as “Death Valley” due to a recent spate of hiking-related events and its connection to Middle Ages suicides. One of the daughters smelled something strange, like burning, and found the body of a burned woman hidden behind some rocks.The family informed the Bergen police upon their return.

Upon examining the body, the authorities discovered that the woman had suffered severe burns to her front, obliterating her ability to recognize herself.The fire destroyed some belongings, including a plastic passport container, an empty bottle of St. Hallvard liqueur, burned paper fragments, and a fur cap that subsequently tested positive for gasoline, even though there was no bonfire visible near the body. Identification markings and labels had been erased or rubbed off. An autopsy revealed that a combination of phenobarbital intoxication and carbon monoxide toxicity was the cause of death.  In addition to having soot in her airways, which indicated she was still alive during the fire, her neck was also contained.

She has been missing since November 23, when she left Hotel Hordaheimen Room 407. From handwritten check-in papers, the police learned that she had traveled Europe and Norway under at least eight aliases and counterfeit passports, stayed at various Bergen hotels, and was known for changing rooms after check-in. Some authorities believe she was murdered for these reasons, leading many to believe she was a traitor. She was buried in an unmarked cemetery in Bergen’s Møllendal graveyard on February 5, 1971, as a Catholic, based on her use of saint’s names on check-in forms Her identity has remained unknown since the case was reopened in 2016 and new details were revealed.
