The background of Ivory Coast Independence Day

Ivory Coast Independence Day is an annual celebration of the anniversary of the country’s declaration of independence. Ivory Coast is a republic in West Africa that shares borders with Guinea, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ghana. Prior to its colonisation by France, the majority of European contact with this region of West Africa was for elephant ivory trade, hence the region’s name.

In 1843, the French established a protectorate over a few of the region’s kingdoms. French explorers, missionaries, trading companies, and soldiers progressively expanded the area under French control inland from the lagoon region until 1908, when the Ivory Coast became a French colony in its entirety.

In 1946, when the Fourth French Republic was established, the Ivory Coast became a French overseas territory with its own parliament and representation in the French national assembly. The Overseas Reform Act (Loi cadre) of 1956, which transferred several powers from Paris to elected territorial governments in French West Africa and eliminated the residual voting disparities, marked a turning point in relations with France. The Ivory Coast became an autonomous republic within the French Community on December 4, 1958.

On July 11, 1960, France permitted the Ivory Coast to become an independent nation. On August 7, 1960, the Ivory Coast achieved independence, and Félix Houphout-Boigny became its first president. When Houphout-Boigny became the country’s first president, his government gave producers better prices for their produce to further stimulate production, which led to a substantial influx of workers from neighbouring nations. The increase in coffee production propelled the Ivory Coast to third place in the globe, behind Brazil and Colombia. By 1979, the nation was the world’s foremost cocoa producer. Following their independence, they experienced substantial growth.
